Meditation with a Uniquely Austin Twist

This week we’re taking meditation to the streets! Or rather, the chill vibes of Zilker Park. I was inspired to record this week’s meditation for you while I was soaking in the warm sunshine and playful energy of one of Austin’s most beloved parks. It feels like it’s part of Austin’s DNA to lazily lounge about in the grass, maybe throw a frisbee or whatever to whoever, and listen to some groovy tunes, all in the midst of a global pandemic. Never change, Austin!

Lately I find myself wanting to spend more time in nature, to seek refuge in the peaceful sights and sounds, and to feel connected to my fellow Austinites (and their dogs, so many dogs). Basically to remember not everything is terrible. So everyday I choose to add in a few fun things that will support my well-being and mental health. For me, it’s walking on the trail, live streaming yoga classes, and trying new recipes (thanks Antoni!). I also choose to radiate loving-kindness to those humans with whom I come into contact*.

*from 6 feet away, okay? don’t come at me!

This self-care prescription will look different for you. Maybe it’s FaceTime-ing your best friend or learning a new language or homebrewing kombucha. However you’re filling your day right now, consider that your outlook, your attitude doesn’t have to be all gloom, all the time. This isn’t a lecture. And I certainly don’t intend to minimize or invalidate those of us who experience the very real and debilitating effects of depression. Rather, this is a gentle, loving reminder that every moment brings infinite possibilities. You don’t have to move through life on autopilot. Actually, life moves through you!

Now is the time to expand your view of what’s possible and take up that hobby you never thought you’d have time for, rekindle a friendship that has fizzled out, or finally adopt a daily meditation practice (!). Not as another annoying thing on your to-do list, but as a mindful choice to prioritize your well-being so that you can fully embody this physical form, this life, this moment in history.

I don’t know why this is happening. I don’t know when it will end. I don’t know what the aftermath will be. For instance, will I be able to have a normal face-to-face conversation with someone after this?? My obvious social awkwardness at Trader Joe’s this week suggests no. Inhale. Exhale. Laugh. (Quick PSA: It’s okay to laugh!)

And until next time, be well my sweet friends. Care for your mind, body, and spirit. Care for each other. I’m here if you need me.

From my heart to yours,

Tracy
